Demi Kanon's 2022 plans

Interview with Demi Kanon

  • Hey Demi, first of all: Happy New Year! How are you doing?

I’m doing great. The last few months I’ve been very busy with new music and plans. I think it’s a fresh way to start the new year.

  • You just dropped your latest single Activate, awesome track! Can you tell us a bit about it, what’s the story behind it?

At the end of last year, I thought maybe it would be cool to turn around my workflow. Instead of just making a track and working with the theme of that track, why not come up with a cool theme and create the track? So that’s what I did! And this will definitely not be the last track in that theme.

I came up with the idea to work with Artificial Intelligence. It had to sound as if a computer made it, in a good way obviously haha! I’ve added glitchy/robotic sounds to give you this futuristic feeling.

I know this track needed a lot of drive with a very catchy melody because I wanted to play it for the first time in Switzerland. The response was amazing! Couldn’t wish for a better crowd.

For the clip and artwork, I found a designer who helped me create the Artificial Intelligence look. I showed him the track and he immediately started to make something cool in 3D, which ended up in me editing the whole video clip. Everything fell in place.

  • You recently posted a backstage clip on your Instagram feed. What does that mean?

That’s right! I had this idea to create a backstage setting and right before I enter the stage, I step into a digital world, using the cloth as some sort of portal, which made my laptop & phone glitchy/trippy. Eventually, one second of the “Activate” clip was shown.

It’s supposed to be a continuous storyline, so see it as a teaser for the track & theme together.

The backstage location itself was not easy to fix since every party in Holland is cancelled. But I managed to find one: Poppodium Duycker. Shout-out to them!

I came up with the idea to work with artificial intelligence this year!
  • Back in 2016, you had your first Scantraxx release, Illuminated. How did your style evolve since then?

I think it really developed in a way that I’m happy with. My sound kept its origins of a catchy melody but with a harder edge to it. I like to challenge myself every time I’m in the studio so I often use new sounds and try to maintain my sound while thinking out of the box here and then.

  • If there’s one piece of advice you could give the Demi Kanon of 2016, what would it be?

Too many answers! You always make decisions which you would do differently next time, but if I have to give one answer it would be: make more live edits for your shows. That way it gives more drive and you can fit more tracks in one set.

  • What is your biggest achievement so far?

My biggest achievement so far is being able to become a full-time DJ/producer. Doing the things you love every day and it almost never feels like work again!

Besides that, I also got booked for the Defqon.1 mainstage. It still needs to happen though. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for this year!

  • Are there still any festivals on your bucket list where you haven’t played yet?

I would really like to play in America one day. EDC looks really cool! Really curious about the crowd as well.

  • What can we expect from Demi Kanon in 2022?

Next-level tracks, big collabs, and awesome video projects in the AI theme. And looking further ahead in time: sa (mini) album or live show. And last but not least... having a lot of parties with you guys!
